It’s 2019 and mental illness, depression, stress and anxiety are all on the increase. There’s been a whole heap of studies done that have linked high levels of social media use with these higher levels of depression, stress and anxiety. High levels of social media use? That’s most people these days isn’t it? I read recently that a ‘normal’ person will spend, on average, at least 2 hours a day on social media! That seems high to me but then again I’m not ‘normal’ and I know that some people spend even longer on it all. So have we got a problem? Is the way we live our modern lives affecting how we see ourselves and our self-worth and is social media tearing us apart?Read More
With a title like ‘Live for the Look’ I bet you’re wondering what this week’s blog is all about…
I’m going to do a little bit of cheating this week. A little while ago I was asked by the lovely team at RMG Models (https://www.rmg-models.co.uk/) to answer some questions for their blog, about being a photographer. The title for my blog post this week came from the RMG agency hashtag…Read More
‘What do you desire? What makes you itch?’
I was lucky! From a young age I always knew that I wanted to do something creative! I found my passion for photography and I’m now extremely fortunate to be able to do something that I love so much as my job/career. This isn’t me boasting! As any self-employed person, especially in the creative industry, knows, it’s not always easy for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes we all need a little bit of motivation. I know I do!Read More
I over-complicate these blog posts I think! Sometimes it should just be about sharing a portrait full of genuine emotion!
There are lots of technical elements to portrait photography, some of them easier to get to grips with than others but once you’ve got that bit covered it comes down to you and the subject in front of your camera. The best portraits, for me personally, are created when you capture a feeling of genuine emotion. So here’s one I made earlier…Read More
Short and sweet blog post this week!
So I haven’t tested in ages! Testing, if you don’t know, is basically a collaboration between creatives. Generally, no one is being paid but it’s a time where we can experiment with ideas and concepts, whether they are mine or another member of the team, and see what comes up.
Last week I shared some images from one of my ideas from the test shoot, called ‘Newspeak’, make sure you check out the last blog if you haven’t already! This week I thought I would share the images that, my loyal makeup artist, Gaby Hunt wanted to create from our test…Read More
‘Newspeak is the language of a totalitarian state. The ruling Party created Newspeak, a controlled language of restricted grammar and limited vocabulary, meant to limit the freedom of thought — personal identity, self-expression, free will — that threatens the ideology of the régime of the Party, who have criminalized such concepts into thoughtcrimes.’
Does this sound a little familiar to anyone else?
OK, I didn’t make this word up or the explanation of its meaning. Newspeak is a word that comes from the George Orwell novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four…Read More
So I promised myself that when I started the blog that I would use it to share all of my creative work, not just my photography. With that in mind and with a little trepidation, this is a simple poem that I created with a little imagination and some marker pens!
This is something I do from time to time to stay creative and to occasionally spark some new ideas or inspiration that might translate into an image of some sort later down the line. It’s a simple but effective technique…Read More
I don’t know about anyone else but I love seeing a little of the behind the scenes action that goes into making an image. I follow a couple of big advertising and celebrity photographers online, who openly share their behind the scenes shots and a break down of how the shot was achieved including the equipment they used to get the shot. For this blog post, I thought I might follow suit and deconstruct one of my own shots from a client shoot for Anita Lingerie in Germany…Read More
So the UK has been hit by a heatwave this week with temperatures reaching record highs of 38 degrees celsius. Pretty hot right? Too hot for some and, definitely, too hot to be sat at a computer blogging! That’s why this week I am a little late on posting and also why I am keeping this short…Read More
This week there has been so much going on, and I will be honest and say that my brain has been filled with jobs, post-production, meetings, ideas and life away from photography. It’s been hard to focus my brain on just one thing especially the blog! Even now I am sat here being distracted from writing by messages about a job tomorrow and emails from clients wanting to book in pre-production calls. So ironically this blog post is about some simple things that I do to try and stay focused! Hang on there’s the phone….
Sorry about that! Interestingly though it does segway nicely into my first tip on staying focused…Read More
I have a heavy heart this week! My dear friend Bob sadly had to say goodbye to his best friend and canine companion of 12 years, Skip. Skip passed away early on Friday morning with Bob by his side as he had always been. If you have read my previous blog post about these two characters, ‘This is Bob…’ you may understand why this loss is so painful for Bob and anyone that ever crossed paths with Skip. Bob is obviously heartbroken but staying positive as Bob always does!Read More
‘The newest Islander to arrive on Love Island is…’
No not really! But you were nearly had you right?
This blog post actually has nothing to do with Love Island apart from the fact that during a recent shoot, with Danni W from RMG Models, we created some shots that, the whole team joked, looked like Love Island promo images…Read More
Barcelona is one of my favourite cities in the world. I’m not sure what it is, but I just feel at ease there. Earlier this year I went to Barcelona, but this time I decided to go alone! It may sound strange to a lot of people but I actually really like travelling alone, you can really get a sense and feel of a place. Wandering the streets of Barcelona on this trip really confirmed my love for this incredible city and culture…Read More
If you have followed me for a while on social media you may already know the story of Bob and Skip. I met Bob in 2015 when I had a photography studio in Birmingham, United Kingdom. This is the story of how we met one another and the Facebook post that I shared in June of the same year (with Bobs permission of course)…
‘This is Bob…
Bob is not an alcoholic, Bob is not a drug addict but Bob does live on the streets!!
I met Bob a couple of weeks ago in Birmingham while he was sat, with his trusty sidekick, Skip, reading his book in the sunshine…Read More
A completely different style of blog post this week. ‘The Great British Break Up’ is a selection of images and pieces of writing that I felt captured the mood, and feeling of the people around me as I wandered the streets of grey, East London with my camera. I wanted to try and create a story or narrative around the moments that I shot, and with everything going on here in the UK, a ‘Break Up’ seemed very fitting…Read More
It’s going to be another short blog post this week in comparison to last weeks lengthy number. I have been in London working, for the early part of the week, so time has been a little limited, especially for thinking about and composing another blog post. With that being said, here is what I came up with at short notice…
I’m keeping it nice and simple again this week! I thought I would simply share some of my favourite images from a recent lingerie shoot with, the lovely…Read More
In my opinion, it doesn’t matter what kind of photographer you are, whether you're a commercial photographer, a portrait photographer, a fashion photographer or even a hobbyist photographer it doesn’t matter, I would always recommend working on personal projects.
When you work in the photography industry, especially in advertising, you can often find yourself…Read More
It’s going to be a quick blog post this time, as it’s been a busy week in the world of this UK based photographer. A couple of commercial shoots, a location recce, a meeting or three, an inspiring talk from a well known face in the advertising and creative industry (more on that in a later blog… possibly?) and then a mountain of admin and post-production work, has meant there has been very little time to think about the next interesting subject for the blog. I racked my brain and had a think about what to bore you, I mean entertain you this week… So here it goes!Read More
Who am I? What a deep question! I promise it’s not quite as philosophical as it sounds!
In the first post I rambled on about the reasons why I started a blog, being accountable for my own creativity yadda yadda! (Hopefully you read it and if not, shame on you!) So in this blog post I thought I better tell you a little about me, my photography background and how I got started in the photography industry. So sit back, get comfortable as this could be a very long blog post!
‘A long time ago in a galaxy far far…Read More
Every now and then, in any creatives life, we experience that ‘creative block’. Some of us more than others. It’s just not flowing or you’ve lost some of that passion that you once had for the medium that you love so much! Don’t worry, it happens to everyone, even the greatest artists throughout history I would guess. Now, I am most certainly not one of the greatest artists in history, but this is where I also found myself recently… in ‘Creative Nowhere Land’!Read More
